Xmas Addendum: Festive Lights

I'd hoped to capture the noteworthy christmas decor around Makati ... December here in the business hub is really a dazzling display of light (and peso power!) with each building trying to upstage each other showing their Christmas glam ...

Sadly, due to various demands on my time (shopping, eating, out-of-town trips) the Christmas season came and went, with me having only a few measly pictures to show ... still, I decided to post them, just to serve as an inspiration for myself to do better next year :-)

My girl friends and I had an argument about this ... they thought the decor "fell down" and couldn't recognize it at first. I, with my superior elven eyesight, informed them that it was obviously a ribbon - and a dainty, lacy, lighted one at that! It took the proper angle (i.e. my sister had to climb over fences and lamp posts) to capture the beauty of Rustan's Christmas ribbon ...

I've always admired the taste and sheer class evoked by the decor of the Enterprise Center. Every year, without fail, no matter what the occasion, I end up being awed. Christmas 2006 is no exception ...

Moving away from Makati, the simple hanging stars over SM Mall of Asia's "boardwalk" made me smile ...

Moving still farther away from Makati, I also liked the lanterns adorning the stately tree fronting Antonio's doorway ... I thought it looked like a tree from Lorien, with "stars" scattered artfully all over the branches ...

Sigh. That's all I have. Can't wait for Xmas 2007!

Provincial Charms

Last December, I tagged along with my fiancee's family to their hometown in Nueva Ecija for their annual Xmas visit. It has been a while since I've set foot on rural soil (as in semi-paved roads, rice paddies and mud-soaked carabao-type rural). My last visit to our relatives in Bulacan was way back in the 90s and I have forgotten the simple charms offered by a bucolic lifestyle ... It was a veritable trip down memory lane for me ... and each image made me nostalgic for the lost laughter, tears and memories of my childhood - when I ran barefoot with my cousins over grassy meadows and played hide and seek under the soft moonlight ...

I remember chasing my fair share of hapless chickens and ducks ...

And risking mutilation from irate mother fowls protecting their precious babies ...

I recall being awakened by the strident call of the roosters at dawn while sleepily watching our elders prepare to tend to the farm ...

I recollect pestering my uncles to let me ride the cart instead, since they wouldn't let me get on top the carabao ...

I have vague memories of those afternoon get-togethers from which children were banned ... but we inevitably found ways to sidle up to mommy or daddy's lap :-)

My nose remembers the crisp, fresh scent of country air, which permeated my clothes while I was there - which was eventually leeched out by the aircon freshener on the bus ride home :-(

I recall how utterly fascinating the insect world was for me (expressions like "eyew" and "yuck" weren't part of my vocabulary back then) ...

And of course, how can I forget the pretty colorful flowers each dutiful housewife adorned her front yard with, painstakingly tending to the precious blooms while keeping an eagle eye on the pesky brats who kept trying to decapitate the poor plants (guilty moi!) Now, as an adult, I can admire from afar, without resorting to plucking :-)

I remember being shy, feeling small in a world of giants ...

Eventually though, curiosity would entice me back to mischief ... :-)

But most of all, I remember the laid-back, sleep-the-day-away feeling that doesn't go away, no matter how many chores I help with ...

It was nice to go back, indeed, and to be reminded of the joys of simple living ... before plunging back into the complex, fast and furious world of urban life ...

Pre-X'mas RnR @ Sonya's BnB

I've always longed to experience for myself that much-gabbed about, intimate Tagaytay hideaway that was Sonya's Garden (which, fortunately, is now a B&B) ... and with the chilly x'mas breeze for company, off we went ...

The cottage they assigned to us was at the end of a verdant trail, nestled cozily under the ever-present trees of ... Sonya's forest? ;-) The gentle tinkling of windchimes, and the relaxing sound of flowing water brought to mind images of Rivendell and Lorien. A refreshing scent of mint and other unidentified herbs pervaded the air, which was a welcome olfactory treat for noses desensitized by Manila's ever-present smog.

Portentiously, our cottage was named "Parsley" of Scarborough Fair fame, believed to provoke lust and love in Medieval times ... avert!!! :-)

With fresh flowers, esoteric reading materials and a spectacular view of the greenery ...

The bedroom was even more charming, with a large comfy bed and big, fluffy pillows designed for pure sleeping pleasure ...

The bedspreads, pillow covers and mantels were all embroidered with dainty floral patterns, reminding me sharply of my tita's sorely-missed vacation house in Bulacan ...

Native "His n Hers" slippers were also provided ...

The bathroom was an amalgam of native charm and modern convenience ... and the feeling of intimate isolation fostered by the cottage almost lulled us into forgetting about the drapes ... ;-) (what a shock that would have been to the dogs cavorting innocently outside!)

Organic toiletries - honey mint shampoo and oatmeal soap ... guaranteed to make you smell absolutely delectable after your shower!

The cottage itself is pretty enough to tempt you stay inside forever ... but then you'll miss out on the other stuff the place has to offer ... for what is a garden without flowers? ...

which are all grown in the greenhouse ...

that doesn't look like a greenhouse ...

because of its pleasantly surprising nooks ...

which are ideal for lovebirds like us ;-)

If you thought the place was colorful only by day, guess again. The various ornate, antique lamps adorning nearly every nook and cranny set the place aglow with rainbow lights at night ... which nearly made me forget about the creepy sigh of the wind and the eerie rustling of branches against our bedroom window ... forgive my hyperactive imagination :-)

And then there's Sonya's Sensuous Spa, which promised unparalleled tactile delights ...

The main massage house looked invitingly relaxing and romantic at the same time, unfortunately we weren't able to experience it (due to poor customer service) oh well, there's always next time ...

However, we quickly forgot about our pique come breakfast time ... as we were greeted by this charming country tableau ...

Breakfast was served shortly after, and consisted of fried rice, crunchy danggit, aromatic adobo, hot chocolate and fresh fruits ... mmmm ... yummm!

Returning from our occular inspection of our future wedding site, we were served with Sonya's patented lunch - salad, pasta and fresh dalandan juice ...

Advice for future diners: don't stuff yourself - else you'll miss out on this sinful chocolate cake partnered with the most refreshing mint tea I've ever sipped ....

So was the P2,800 per head worth it? Definitely! We only wish we had more time to just laze around at the cottage, re-read the worn-out copy of "The Little Prince" at our bedside table, walk the many hidden pathways and take hundreds more pictures of this charming place ...

Cute and Cuddly, Anyone?

Rachel Hale is our favorite photographer for all things cute and cuddly. Every year without fail, she manages to elicit excited cries of "Awww, how cute is that?" (complete with pouting expression) from us. No matter that the subject has been used countless times before - she always manages to find a fresh angle to it. We discovered Rachel way back in 2002 from the unique and eye-catching cat/dog calendars being sold at National Bookstore ... and we have unfailingly bought a copy ever since. I like all her pictures but the ones I posted below are closest to my heart ...

I dub this "Little Ginny" - at least, this angelic face is how I picture Ginny to be when she was just a wee pup, gazing innocently at you with those limpid blue eyes while nibbling with unformed puppy teeth on your unsuspecting toes :-)

This yellow lab with the pweetty pweetty eyes remind of Ginny's brother Peter (sans the girlie necklace of course!) Actually, he kinda looks more like George (Peter's twin) who's so gay, he can give the fab5 a run for their money :-)

Despite reminding me of our-ill fated but much beloved Siamese, Ebony, this picture describes me better than I can ever write or verbalize. CLW (Cute Little Witch). I'm a dainty (monicker for "height below 5ft") and utterly feline creature addicted to catnaps, with an often dormant witchy-bitchy side which asserts itself only when you: 1) step on my tail 2) deprive me of my beloved catnaps and 3) try to out-bitch me. Meeoww! :-)

This is Kikay Kitty, my Alter-ego. Admittedly, my Kikay-ness is an acquired personality trait, imbibed by unconsciously associating with other Kikay creatures until it became a crucial part of my psyche. I'm not complaining though :-) Everybody deserves to look and feel beautiful! This trait only becomes dangerous when you don't have the brains to control it, which, fortunately is not an affliction I'll ever have to worry about heehee ;-) (those impulse buys at last week's tiangge don't count!)

SWATCH PHOTOSHOOT

Though our slapdash entries (we submitted them on the last hour of the last day ... and only then discovered there was a theme!) didn't win (sniff, sniff) - we had a blast getting our doggie to "pose" for us. This entailed us doing a lot of disgusting and degrading (if anybody ever found out!) stuff which I will carry with me to the grave. (Hey, you try negotiating with a creature under suspicion of ADD and see how far you go!) Suffice it to say that we literally poured blood, sweat and tears to "engineer" the following shots and we're mighty proud of 'em! :-)

This is also a belated tribute to my sister's photography and digital editing skills :-)

"Bad Doggie"

Thankfully, Ginny has outgrown her "chew-everything-forbidden-to-bits" stage - which can be equated with a toddler's thumbsucking phase - still, there are times when she regresses, slipping back to puppyhood state and driving us all crazy ... :-)

Don't let that scary, fanged face intimidate you, our black ball of fluff is as harmless as a butterfly. Really, she doesn't bite! At least, not to do you harm anyway ... it's just her own unique way of "making lambing" - she can be a little dense sometimes and mistakes our limbs for her favorite rawhide toys :-)

"Doggie Time"

Time has no meaning for butterflies ... and dogs with the same personality :-)

Actually, 10 minutes is more like it. Our dog is like a pressurized soda bottle, with the right stimuli - she sizzles and pops for a few seconds then slowly but inexorably settles into a vegetative state after that brief manic burst of energy.

"Run, Kitty, run!"

Actually, I was really thinking "Kitty, don't run! My jaw is hurting from prolonged smiling and my arms sore from restraining 25 kilos worth of curious dog!" What Ginny plans to do if ever she catches the cat, I don't know ... any hint of aggression, even the hissing of a tiny kitten has her backing off, blissfully unaware that she is causing embarrassment for her fellow large breeds. :-)

GINNY (aliases: Ginny Doogie, Ginnyfur and Guenhyvar)

This entire section is devoted to this cute, sexy, huggable, endearingly klutzy, mentally-challenged ball of fluff who has been enriching our lives since the day she bit (rather harshly, as I recall!) and slobbered her way into our lives and hearts ... :-)

I wanted to name her Guenhyvar, after that sleekly beautiful, mischievous and endearingly loyal magical panther in one of my favorite Fantasy books ...

I had visions of a black guard dog, walking faithfully by my side, ready to defend me with her life if need be - and at the same time, a playful and energetic companion to romp with at parks or at the beach.

Instead we got Ginny - and our lives have never been the same ... :-)

SOLANA XP

Scouting for a relaxing weekend getaway destination, we chanced upon this little-known (at least in my circle!) gem in the dive-crazy town of Anilao Batangas ...

Getting there was a rough understatement ... narrow lanes, cement mixers and sedans simply do not mix! Despite the tough roads, the scenic drive afforded tantalizing glimpses of the deep blue sea ... we're pretty sure though that the roads are asphalt-smooth and stress-free by now ... ;-)

As we trekked down the steep mountain path to the beach, we felt as if we were entering an enchanted forest, time seemed to stand still as our senses were suddenly permeated by nature's distinct sounds and scents. Manila (and real life) seemed so far away ...

Off the beaten path ...

If you're looking for a wide expanse of sandy white beach and shallow waters for swimming, Solana is not the place for you - the shoreline is rocky and barely there, the water - deep, clear and coral-strewn. Rather, Solana is a diver/snorkeller's paradise - with 5-star service and amenities thrown in for a comfortable, worry-free stay.

The main reception hall (cum lounge and relaxation area) was quaint and pretty with an eclectic selection of magazines and books, all the coffee, tea or juice you can drink and specacular views 24/7 - my dream vacation house!

The relatively steep rates include full meals and snacks which all looked too pretty to eat ... well, almost! :-)

And where there's food ... there's always the effortlessly charming "Oh! Lala!"

After each meal, I couldn't resist going for a brief swing (I want one exactly like it!) ...

I also had a brief sojourn inside the meditation hut (yes, those cushions are really really soft and utterly huggable!) ...

and a little lounge act with a good book before the evening cruise ...

we shared a sunset toast by the boat at the end of a blissfully relaxing day ...

After dinner, we couldn't resist getting a massage (with the most divinely scented oil I've ever slathered on myself!) and with the sound of gently rolling waves lulling us into sweet oblivion ...

One of the many aspects of Solana that I really like is its unwavering commitment to local crafts, designs and products. Everything (from the buntal-covered cushions, to the rattan and abaca-hewn chairs up to the local manghihilot with the divine hands) is distinctly, proudly 100% Filipino. The only concessions to the presence of Caucasian tourists are: air-conditioning, salad, bread and cereals at the buffet tables and of course, state-of-the art diving and snorkelling gear (the use of the latter is included in the fee :-) )

The following day was spent frolicking under the sun and playing peek-a-boo with Nemo and the rest of the gang (a pity we didn't have an underwater camera). As I said earlier, Solana is really a great place for diving and snorkelling. The fish-abundant corals are a stone's throw away from the shore - you don't have to rent a boat (guests from other resorts are even taken to Solana's shores for snorkelling) and a little further away is a nice group of secluded islands for the more advanced divers - next year, we promised ourselves to try our hand at diving. (I need to get over my fear of drowning in deep water first!) :-)

So I contented myself taking amateur pictures, trying to capture some of nature's palette for the day ...

There was the Fisherman (not man-made, the resort's denizens assured us) ...

God looking down at us (I'm thinking He looks a little sad at the unwitting destruction of the fragile corals) Area for improvement: all resorts should inform guests to have a care with the corals - crushing them with your feet - even accidentally should be a punishable offense ...

And lastly, we spent some quality time with Solana's best kept secret - canine wonders Toby and Snoop! (Toby is the rust-colored doggie and the black one is his mother Snoop)

Wondering what they did with those coconuts? - Presenting the four-fanged coconut demolition team (Grrrr! These coconuts never new what hit them!)...

At the end of it all, we were both loathe to leave ... and eager to return :-) Every peso we spent was worth it - just remembering how the place made me feel has a calming effect on my senses. Kudos to the Management and the super-friendly staff :-)

"ALMOST ... BUT NOT QUITE"

10 months after my ex-boyfriend jumped me from within the sallow green walls of Lung Center to whisk me off to Baguio and back for a shanghai-type proposal in his car, I am neck-deep in wedding paraphernalia and ideas (unwittingly collected from a dozen bridal fairs and well-meaning friends and acquaintances)

I never expected the complexity of planning a wedding nowadays ... esp. if you're an OC bridezilla, incapable of not personalizing most of the details :-)

But on some days, even the staunchest bridezillas get headaches :-)

On those days, I take a look at this picture taken by my sister and take a breather. I take stock of the important things and immerse myself in the wellsprings of love and laughter in my life - you know, House MD, shopping, soft, moist bibingka, creamy hot cocoa, Brad Pitt and Jude Law, to name a few :-) I remind myself (forcefully, sometimes!) that it is our wedding and not anybody else's. I tell myself that perfection is not the goal. Providing unforgettably happy moments for us and our guests is. Almost there ... but not quite yet :-)

"not-so" HAPPY FEET

It might have been my unnaturally toxic week at the office ... it might have been the slight but unmistakable twinges that signified the advent of my monthly ordeal with femininity ... it might have been the loads of subliminal messages I've imbibed from leaving Discovery Channel on while I slumbered ...

Whatever it was, it prevented me from blissfully enjoying the movie as an innocent child might. First half was great, the animation was outstanding, the dialogue witty and amusing - in short it was the perfect foil for the stress of every-day life that gets to even the most cheerful person once in a while.

But the moment Mumble jumped off the cliff in pursuit of the fishing boats up to the realistically improbable happy ending, the entire audience was silent. Even the normally rambunctious kids were silent. When the lights went on, people looked dazed - no excited chatter - just an awkward, uncomfortable silence broken by the usual sounds of people getting up to leave. I cannot vouch for what our fellow movie-goers felt but on my part - i felt distrubed. Movie-goers from developed countries might not find anything wrong - but coming from a country which still bears the scars of centuries of colonization - "dancing" for the amusement of the "enlightened ones" in order to get them to repair the damage they caused in the first place hits a little too close to home. :-(

I want my money back! They promised mindless, cute fun with the usual but poignant pathos thrown in for good measure. What did I get? Disturbing realizations that will surely haunt me during REM sleep! Give me harmless and enjoyable flicks like Ice Age, Shrek and Incredibles anytime! Darn it ... now I need comfort food to appease my thwarted attempt at escapism ... ;-)
